چکیده

The ability of plants to absorb ions selectively is a major reason for the preference for chemical rather than physical theories of ion uptake (11), yet in spite of this, comparatively little attention has been paid to this property. Thus far, selectivity between alkali cations has been examined in excised barley roots (6) in beet discs (12) and in whole plants (1,4). In recent years the relative absorption of potassium and cesium has become of practical interest because of the position of Cs137 as one of the principal long-lived fission products from nuclear weapons. While cesium behaves in a qualitatively similar fashion to potassium in absorption by excised roots (2. 6) and by whole plants (4, 9) and also in redestribution through plants (10), simultaneous determinations of the rates at which potassium and cesium are absorbed have rarely been made. The experiments reported here were designed to examine the relative rates at which cesium and potassium were absorbed by roots and were transferred to the shoots of young barley plants. It was desired in particular to examine the effect of varying the external concentration of potassium. It was therefore not possible to grow plants for long periods of time since the experimental treatments would lead to differences in growth rate. Further, the interpretation of results over long periods may be complicated by differential redistribution of potassium and cesium during growth. For these reasons a short experimental period was adopted. From a practical point of view interest lies in the behavior of carrier-free Cs'37 rather than of macro amounts of cesium. However. it is not legitimate to compare the absorption of Cs'37 and stable potassium over short periods since, whereas a gross uptake of the ra(lioactive Cs'37 is observed, the uptake of stable potassium is nieasured as a net result of an influx and an efflux of the element into and out of the tissue. In the extreme case, no uptake of stable potassium might be measured whereas a radioactive isotope of potassium might be taken up to a considerable degree by

Cesium Inhibits Plant Growth through Jasmonate Signaling in Arabidopsis thaliana

It has been suggested that cesium is absorbed from the soil through potassium uptake machineries in plants; however, not much is known about perception mechanism and downstream response. Here, we report that the jasmonate pathway is required in plant response to cesium. Jasmonate biosynthesis mutant aos and jasmonate-insensitive mutant coi1-16 show clear resistance to root growth inhibition cau...

Application of ionomics to plant and soil in fields under long-term fertilizer trials.

Ionomics is the study of elemental accumulation in living organisms using high-throughput elemental profiling. In the present study, we examined the ionomic responses to nutrient deficiency in maize grown in the field in long-term fertilizer trials. Furthermore, the available elements in the field soils were analyzed to investigate their changes under long-term fertilizer treatment and the iono...

Modelling potassium uptake by wheat

A model has been used to simulate potassium (K) uptake by wheat in a pot culture experiment. Three soils from India, namely Alfisol, Inceptisol and Vertisol, were differentially K exhausted by Sudan grass (Surghum vulgare var. Sudanensis) for a period of 280 days and were used to simulate potassium uptake by wheat (Triticum aestivum) and also to predict the amounts of K released or fixed during...

Structure-Activity Relationships of Several Cardiotonic Steroids with Respect to Inhibition of Ion Transport in Frog Muscle

Cesium uptake by sodium-loaded frog sartorius muscles was inhibited 100% by 10(-6)M ouabain and 10(-6)M cymarin. The doses for 50% inhibition of cesium uptake by five cardiotonic aglycones were 1.5 x 10(-6)M for strophanthidin, 2 x 10(-7)M for telocinobufagin, 1.6 x 10(-6) for digitoxigenin, 2.4 x 10(-6)M for periplogenin, and 6.3 x 10(-6)M for uzarigenin. Because of the limited solubility of s...

Cesium Accumulation and Growth Characteristics of Rhodococcus erythropolis CS98 and Rhodococcus sp. Strain CS402.

Growth and cesium accumulation characteristics of two cesium-accumulating bacteria isolated from soils were investigated. Rhodococcus erythropolis CS98 and Rhodococcus sp. strain CS402 accumulated high levels of cesium (approximately 690 and 380 mumol/g [dry weight] of cells or 92 and 52 mg/g [dry weight] of cells, respectively) after 24 h of incubation in the presence of 0.5 mM cesium. The opt...
